Call me nostalgic, but I really miss songs that tell a story. Traditionally these were called ballads. These days, that term is usually reserved for sappy slows songs that adorn Disney movies (cough, cough, Phil Collins, cough). There was a time, though, that a song like Eleanor Rigby could be appreciated as literature as well as for its musical merit.
Do know the story of Eleanor Rigby? Seems like Sir Paul gave us just enough to gather some great images, but not enough to spell the whole thing out. Sometimes I just want to sit down and write the story of Eleanor Rigby. I mean, all the lonely people, where do they all come from? Maybe I know. The Beatles have a few songs that do this to me. Man, I wish I could write like The Beatles.
There are some other musician that are also good for this kind of inspiration: Bjork, Peter Gabriel, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd and, lately, Kelly Clarkson. Yeah, I said it. So, you guys want to go in with me?
I call dibs on Eleanor Rigby.

wow, what a shitty blog.
Ah, but not as shitty as insulting cowardly anonymous comments. All the stupid people, where do they all come from?
I, for one, love your blog, especially the part about Kelly Clarkson.
Don't let jerks like that get to you. I can't think of a greater ambition than tapping yor creative muses. As a HUGE Beatles fan, I always appreciate anything written about them. Heck, my son's name is Harrison Tyler and my daughter is McCartney Raye. If you ever get a chance, drop by my blog - Left of Centrist - where I do a daily "On this Date in Beatles History". Also, as a side note about Eleanor Rigby, it might surprise you to know that there really was an Eleanor Rigby and that she is buried in the cemetary behind the church where John and Paul first met. Here's a link to a site that will tell you all about it. Keep writing and don't let morons give you a hard time.
Awesome, Robert. Thanks for the head's up. And I love the idea for your blog.
"All the stupid people, where do they all come from?" HAHAHAHA!!
I am a Singer and an Aspiring Songwriter. Growing up I was never much of a Beatles fan; but Its been interesting for me to see that as I have developed my craft and really started analyzing music and lyrics, all the notes I've gathered circle back around to The Beatles and especially the combined art of Lennon, Mccartney, and Harrison. I have just recently started an actual degree in music and for the first time I'm learning the groundwork of theory, methodology, and such, but I would love to pick apart the craft of each of these 3 composers and really see what was going individually. Anyone have any ideas where to start?
